Inspector's First Stop
Inspectors verify the panel first — they count breakers, check amperage, and confirm dedicated circuits before looking at anything else. Have this checklist ready before they arrive.
Circuit Amperage Qty Type NEC Reference Field Note
Small Appliance Circuits 20A 2 min. Required 210.52(B) Countertop only. No lights, no fridge.
Refrigerator 20A 1 Dedicated 210.52(B)(1) Most NJ AHJ require dedicated. Confirm.
Dishwasher 20A 1 Dedicated 210.52(B)(2) Never share with other circuits.
Garbage Disposal 20A 1 Check AHJ 210.52(B)(2) Can share with DW only if AHJ permits.
Built-in Microwave 20A 1 Dedicated 210.52(B) Required if built-in or over 300W.
Range / Cooktop (Electric) 40–50A 1 Required 210.19(A) 240V dedicated. Verify equipment specs.
Range Hood (if separate) 15–20A 1 Check AHJ 210.52(B) Can tap Small Appliance circuit in some AHJ.
⚠ Critical Rule
  • 🔴Small Appliance Circuits cannot feed lighting, receptacles outside the kitchen area, or fixed equipment
  • 🔴Dedicated circuits cannot share neutral with other branch circuits
  • 🔴Range circuit must be 240V only — not shared neutral
✅ Quick Pre-Inspection Check
  • 2 × 20A Small Appliance Circuits labeled
  • Dishwasher on dedicated 20A breaker
  • Disposal circuit confirmed with AHJ
  • Refrigerator dedicated (if AHJ requires)
  • Range on 40–50A 240V dedicated
  • All AFCI/GFCI protection confirmed

Pro Tip — NJ Field Solution
Use a Dual Function GFCI/AFCI Breaker at the panel for kitchen circuits. Covers both requirements in one device, reduces callbacks, and is the cleanest solution for NJ inspections. Most inspectors prefer it.
🚨
Critical — NYC Uses NYCEC, Not NEC
New York City operates under the NYC Electrical Code (NYCEC) — based on NEC but with significant local modifications. What passes in Newark may fail in Brooklyn. Always confirm the adopted edition with the AHJ before starting any kitchen work.

⚠ Most Common Failures
  • Missing GFCI on DW/Disposal (NEC 2020+)
  • No AFCI on Small Appliance Circuits
  • Island receptacle (AHJ still using 2017)
  • Countertop section ≥12" without outlet
✅ Always Safe Approach
  • Install island receptacle regardless of edition
  • Use Dual GFCI/AFCI breakers for all circuits
  • Dedicate refrigerator circuit always
  • GFCI on DW and Disposal always

📐 Spacing Quick Rules
  • 📏Max 2ft (24") from any point on countertop to outlet
  • 📏Any section ≥12" wide needs at least one outlet
  • 📏Outlets must be within 18" above countertop surface
  • 📏Island ≥24"×12" — check your AHJ edition
  • 📏6ft rule from sink applies to all sides of counter
🛡️ Protection Decision Tree
Is it a kitchen circuit?
  • YES → AFCI required (NEC 2017+, NJ adopted)
  • Is it within 6ft of a sink or on countertop?
  • YES → GFCI also required
  • Use Dual GFCI/AFCI breaker — covers both ✅
🚨 Inspector Hot Spots
  • 🔍Panel — breaker count, labels, AFCI/GFCI types
  • 🔍Island — receptacle presence (if AHJ uses 2017)
  • 🔍Dishwasher — GFCI breaker or device
  • 🔍Countertop sections — spacing every 2ft
  • 🔍Sink area — all outlets within 6ft are GFCI
  • 🔍Dedicated circuits — nothing shared
